UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA HUMANITARIAN FIELD TRAINING

United States, 2018

GEG DESIGNED AND FACILITATED A HUMANITARIAN FIELD TRAINING FOR STUDENTS Enrolled in the UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA’s sTRATEGIC LEADERSHIP IN DISASTER AND CONFLICT CLASS

Background: University of Virginia’s (UVA) Frank Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy identified the need for the delivery of a humanitarian field training (HFT) as part of its Strategic Leadership in Disaster and Conflict capstone class.

Requirement: To provide the students enrolled in UVA’s Strategic Leadership in Disaster and Conflict course with the opportunity to apply knowledge and skills learned throughout the semester in a simulated humanitarian field operation. Tailored to this particular UVA course, primary learning objectives and key topic areas included: leadership, communication, teamwork, negotiation, access and assessments.

GEG Contribution: GEG designed and delivered the three-day UVA HFT incorporating:

  • Classroom Instruction – training modules, specifically tailored to a university student audience, covering topics including: leadership; situational awareness; basic equipment and communications (including hands-on demonstrations of radio and GPS technologies); contemplative practice and stress management in the field; gender and culture; negotiations and access; and field assessments.
  • Simulation and Role Play – interactive simulations, including role-play scenarios with professional actors. Simulations included: border access/entry; field assessment; working with the media; negotiation; and working as a team to mitigate security threats.
  • Equipment Demonstrations – demonstrations of humanitarian field kit, including radios/GPS, austere camping supplies, and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV).

GEG delivered the training at Long Branch Farm in Millwood, Virginia. The training included two nights of camping, with equipment and supplies provided by GEG’s professional humanitarian operational kit.
